Canelo Álvarez
"The ring is my office. And when I step in, I go to work."
— Canelo Álvarez
STYLE ANALYSIS
Canelo is the best counter-puncher of his generation. His upper body movement is compact and efficient — small slips, just enough to make the punch miss, then he fires back while the opponent is still extended. The timing on his counters is surgical. He reads the jab, slips to the outside, and comes back with a left hook or right cross before the opponent can reset. Body work is a Mexican tradition, and Canelo carries it forward: the left hook to the liver is his signature finisher. He sets it up by going to the body early in the fight, conditioning the opponent to drop their elbow, then he switches the angle upstairs. His defense looks passive — he stands in the pocket and makes you miss — but the shot selection afterward is what makes it work. Eddy Reynoso's coaching refined his patience. Early-career Canelo was too aggressive. The mature version walks you down, makes you miss, and picks you apart.
