Sugar Ray Leonard
"I consider myself blessed. I consider you blessed. We've all been blessed with God-given talents."
โ Sugar Ray Leonard
STYLE ANALYSIS
Leonard was the most versatile fighter of the 1980s. He could do everything โ box from the outside, brawl on the inside, counter, pressure, switch stances โ and he could do all of it within the same round. His hand speed was blinding, especially the jab and the right cross behind it. The left hook was his power punch, thrown off the jab with a short, compact motion that generated knockout power from short range. What separated Leonard from other fast fighters was his ability to shift gears. Against Durรกn in their rematch, he turned the fight into a track meet โ circling, potting shots, frustrating a fighter who needed to be close to do damage. Against Hearns, he absorbed punishment for eight rounds, then walked through fire to stop a taller, harder-hitting opponent. That adaptability โ knowing when to box and when to fight โ was his greatest weapon.
