Vasyl Lomachenko
"Footwork is not about speed. It is about position."
— Vasyl Lomachenko
STYLE ANALYSIS
Lomachenko's footwork is the most technically advanced in modern boxing. His father had him doing Ukrainian folk dancing as a child, and it shows — the pivots, the directional changes, the ability to throw punches mid-step are all built on that movement foundation. His signature move is the angle step: he steps to the opponent's blind side (their lead shoulder) and throws combinations from an angle they literally cannot see. Most fighters move their feet OR throw punches. Loma does both simultaneously, which is why opponents describe fighting him as "trying to hit a ghost." He doesn't have concussive power, so he wins by accumulation — landing three or four clean shots for every one he takes. His ring cutting is elite for a southpaw. Instead of chasing, he uses geometry: step left, pivot right, and suddenly the opponent is trapped in the corner without understanding how they got there.
Strengths
- Best footwork in modern boxing
- Angles that create openings from nothing
- Combination punching while moving
- Ring cutting intelligence
Weaknesses
- Limited power — rarely stops opponents early
- Can be outmuscled by bigger fighters
- Slow starts cost him early rounds
- Effectiveness drops against opponents who refuse to engage
