When to Use
Use when the opponent is against the ropes or trapped in the corner where they cannot retreat away from the pressure. The constant level changes overwhelm their vertical defense, and each body shot drains their legs and willpower while the head shot scores and stuns. Most effective in the middle rounds after body work has accumulated.
Execution Steps
- Dip your level by bending deeply at the knees and throw a powerful body hook to the ribs, targeting the floating ribs or liver with a compact punch driven by hip rotation and leg drive.
- Rise explosively by pushing through your quads and immediately throw a lead hook or cross to the head while the opponent's guard is still lowered from protecting their body — this is the scoring punch.
- Dip again immediately and throw another body hook to the opposite side of the ribcage, catching the opponent as they raise their guard to protect their head and leave their lower torso exposed.
- Reset to your fighting guard with both hands high and your weight balanced, ready to throw another level-changing sequence or clinch if the opponent starts to counter.

Pro Tips
- This is a Mexican boxing staple perfected by generations of fighters — study Julio César Chávez's body-head attacks and Canelo Álvarez's level-changing combinations to see how they flow naturally between levels.
- The middle head shot is the money shot that scores on the judges' cards — the body shots before and after it serve as the setup and the punishment that makes the head shot land clean.
- Throw this combination after trapping the opponent on the ropes with forward pressure, where their back is against the ropes and they have no room to retreat from the level changes.
Conditioning Drills
- Up-Down Squats: 3 sets of 15 rapid bodyweight squats with a body hook thrown at the bottom and a head hook thrown at the top, building explosive level-change endurance under fatigue.
- Heavy Bag Circuit: 3 rounds alternating 1 minute body shots only, 1 minute head shots only, then 1 minute of mixed body-head-body combinations at full power with proper level changes.
- Mitt Work: Have a partner hold mitts at alternating heights (ribs, chin, ribs) for 4 rounds, calling the level randomly to build reactive targeting and fluid level transitions.
