When to Use
Use as a deception tool when the opponent has settled into a predictable defensive rhythm and their eyes are tracking your hands closely. The windmill motion hijacks their attention, allowing you to land a clean straight shot with the other hand. Best deployed sparingly against opponents who rely heavily on visual cues rather than positional reads.
Execution Steps
- From your fighting stance, begin a wide, exaggerated circular windmill motion with your lead or rear hand, keeping the motion fluid and relaxed to sell the distraction convincingly.
- As the windmill captures the opponent's visual attention, simultaneously load and throw a tight straight punch with the opposite hand, aiming for the opening their distracted guard creates.
- Alternatively, use the windmill arc itself to deliver a disguised uppercut at the bottom of the circular motion, turning the distraction into the weapon by curving the fist upward into the chin.
- Snap the punching hand back to guard immediately after impact, and bring the windmilling arm back to defensive position — the window of exposure must be minimal.

Pro Tips
- Sugar Ray Leonard made the bolo punch famous in his fights against Hearns and Duran — study how he used the windmill to set up straight rights that his opponents never saw coming.
- Kid Gavilan was the original bolo puncher — the technique comes from sugarcane cutting motions in Cuba, where workers developed extraordinary rotational power and timing through repetitive machete swings.
- The highest-percentage bolo setup is windmill low with one hand while throwing a straight to the head with the other — the opponent's eyes drop to the windmill, and the straight arrives above their field of focus.
Conditioning Drills
- Shadowboxing Coordination Drill: Practice the windmill-and-straight coordination for 3 rounds of 3 minutes, alternating which hand windmills each round.
- Heavy Bag Split Attack: Throw the bolo motion to the body while landing a straight to the head, 3 sets of 15 reps per side to build the split-attention timing.
- Arm Circles with Resistance Band: Forward and backward arm circles with light band resistance, 3 sets of 30 seconds each direction to build shoulder endurance for the windmill motion.
