Step Jab-Pivot Hook

A footwork-integrated combination that uses a hard jab to fix the opponent's attention forward while the pivot repositions your entire body to a blind angle. The step jab occupies their guard and freezes them on the center line, then the sharp pivot swings you 45 degrees to their outside, where the hook arrives from a direction they cannot see or defend. Vasyl Lomachenko has built his entire fighting style around this angle-creation principle, making him the most geometrically complex fighter in modern boxing.

When to Use

Use to create attacking angles against a fighter who blocks straight punches well and keeps a disciplined high guard. The jab occupies their attention forward, the pivot takes you off their center line to the outside, and the hook arrives from their peripheral blind spot where their guard is weakest.

Execution Steps

  1. Step forward aggressively and throw a hard jab to fix the opponent's guard and attention forward, making the jab a genuine scoring threat so they have to process it rather than tracking your feet.
  2. Immediately after the jab lands, plant the lead foot firmly and pivot on the ball of the foot, swinging the rear leg around 45-90 degrees to reposition your body to the opponent's outside angle.
  3. As you complete the pivot and your feet settle into the new stance position at 45 degrees, throw a lead hook from the blind angle that the opponent cannot see because their guard is still oriented toward your original position.
  4. The hook lands from an angle the opponent's guard cannot cover without physically turning their body to face you — by the time they rotate, the punch has already landed.
  5. Reset your stance facing the new angle and either exit to safety or continue attacking from the advantageous position you created.

Coaching Cues

"Jab straight, pivot sharp, hook from the angle."
"The pivot is the real weapon — the jab is the distraction."
"They're looking straight ahead while you're on their side."
"Plant the lead foot, spin the rear leg."

Pro Tips

  • Vasyl Lomachenko has made this step-jab-pivot-hook his signature offensive tool — study how he uses the jab as a decoy while his feet do the real work of creating angles that the opponent cannot defend.
  • The jab must carry enough threat to freeze the opponent's attention forward for the half-second the pivot requires — throw it with full extension and snap rather than a lazy arm push.
  • Practice the pivot speed in isolation until the 45-degree reposition becomes instantaneous — drill 100 pivot-only reps daily before adding the jab and hook to the sequence.

Conditioning Drills

  • Pivot Drill: 100 pivot-to-hook reps per day on each side, building the foot speed and balance needed for instantaneous directional changes under pressure.
  • Agility Ladder: 3 rounds of 2 minutes performing quick directional changes and pivot patterns to develop the foot coordination that transfers to the in-fight pivot.
  • Partner Drill: 3 rounds of 3 minutes where you jab the mitts, pivot to the outside, and hit the body shield the coach holds on the new angle, building the full sequence with realistic targeting.

Which coaching cue belongs to the Step Jab-Pivot Hook?

Common Mistakes

  • The pivot being too slow and telegraphed, giving the opponent time to rotate their body to face your new position and neutralizing the angular advantage before the hook arrives.
  • Not throwing the jab hard enough to genuinely fix the opponent's attention forward — a lazy jab does not freeze the opponent, and they will track your footwork instead of processing the punch.
  • Losing balance during the pivot because the lead foot is not firmly planted or the rear leg swings too wide, which makes the hook arrive from a compromised position without rotational power.
