Catch and Shoot

Catching the opponent's jab in the rear glove and instantly returning fire with a jab or cross in a single unified motion. This is the ultimate simultaneous defense-and-offense technique — it collapses two separate actions (block, then counter) into one fluid movement. The catch neutralizes the incoming punch's energy while the counter exploits the momentary window where the opponent's punching hand is extended and their guard is open.

When to Use

Use against predictable jabbers who throw from a stationary position without immediately retracting. You neutralize their attack and score simultaneously, which is psychologically demoralizing because the opponent is punished every time they initiate. Faster and more aggressive than a parry-then-counter sequence because it compresses two actions into one.

Execution Steps

  1. Position your rear hand high and slightly forward of your chin at ear level, palm facing outward, creating a ready catching surface that does not compromise your guard structure.
  2. As the opponent's jab arrives, absorb it cleanly in the palm of your rear glove — keep the wrist firm so the catch is solid, not a slap, and your head does not move from the residual impact.
  3. Simultaneously with the catch, fire your own jab or cross with the lead hand, using the timing of their commitment to land while their guard is split open by the extended punching arm.
  4. Your counter punch arrives while their jab is still extended and before they can retract to guard — this makes the counter virtually unblockable if timed correctly.
  5. Snap the lead hand back to guard and reset your rear catching hand to its ready position, maintaining the threat for the next exchange.

Coaching Cues

"Catch with the rear, fire with the lead — same time."
"One motion, not two separate actions."
"Your counter arrives before they can retract."
"Rear hand absorbs, lead hand attacks."

Pro Tips

  • Canelo Alvarez is the modern master of catch-and-shoot — study how he keeps the rear hand at exactly ear height with the palm pre-rotated outward so the catch requires zero adjustment.
  • The timing must be genuinely simultaneous — practice with a partner at slow speed until defense and offense feel like one indivisible action, then gradually increase tempo over weeks.
  • Works best against fighters who throw the jab from a fixed position without head movement — movers and jabbers who shift angles make the catch less reliable.
  • After establishing the catch-and-shoot pattern, feint the catch to bait the opponent into hesitating on their jab, then attack into the gap their hesitation creates.

Conditioning Drills

  • Partner Catch Drill: Partner throws 50 jabs per round while you catch and fire simultaneously — 3 rounds with 1-minute rest, building to full speed by round three.
  • Reflex Bag: Catch the bag's rebound in the rear glove and immediately fire a straight with the lead hand, 3 sets of 2 minutes for reaction speed.
  • Mitt Work Split Drill: Coach jabs with one hand while holding a target pad with the other for your counter — 3 rounds of 3 minutes to groove the simultaneous timing.

Q1 of 3
Which of these is a common mistake when performing the Catch and Shoot?

Common Mistakes

  • Catching first and then countering as a separate action — this two-step timing is too slow and allows the opponent to retract to guard before your counter arrives.
  • Reaching forward to catch the jab instead of letting it come to you — overextending collapses your defensive structure and pulls your weight forward off-balance.
  • Only catching without returning fire — this wastes the offensive opportunity and teaches the opponent that their jab carries no risk, encouraging them to throw more.
  • Catching with a loose wrist that allows the jab's impact to push through and snap your head back despite the glove contact.
