Gazelle Punch

A leaping punch where the fighter springs forward off both feet while throwing an uppercut or hook, generating enormous power by combining forward momentum with upward leg drive through an explosive plyometric movement. Made famous by Floyd Patterson in the 1950s and perfected by Mike Tyson, the gazelle punch is one of the most spectacular and devastating punches in boxing when timed against a retreating opponent who has nowhere left to back up.

When to Use

Use to close distance explosively against a retreating opponent who is backing up in a straight line and cannot be reached with normal footwork. The gazelle punch bridges gaps of 2-3 feet instantly, arriving before the opponent can reset their guard. Most effective when the opponent is hurt and retreating or when they habitually back up in straight lines without lateral movement.

Execution Steps

  1. From your fighting stance, dip slightly by bending both knees and loading your quads and calves like compressed springs, keeping your guard tight and your eyes locked on the target throughout the dip.
  2. Explode forward off both feet in a low, driving leap toward the opponent, keeping your trajectory more horizontal than vertical to maximize distance-closing speed while minimizing airtime.
  3. At the peak of the leap, throw the uppercut or hook with maximum hip rotation, using the forward momentum of your body to add mass to the punch and drive through the target with your full weight behind it.
  4. Land on both feet simultaneously in a balanced fighting stance with your knees bent to absorb the impact, ready to immediately follow up with a combination or defend against a counter.
  5. Immediately reset your guard with both hands at chin height and move your head off the center line, because landing from the leap makes you briefly stationary and vulnerable to a counter.

Coaching Cues

"Spring forward — don't just jump up."
"Punch at the peak of the leap."
"Land balanced in your stance."
"Load both legs before you launch."

Pro Tips

  • Mike Tyson used the gazelle punch from his crouched peek-a-boo stance to devastating effect against taller opponents, springing upward and forward simultaneously to close the height and distance gap in one explosive motion.
  • The leap should be more horizontal than vertical — you are closing distance, not jumping for height; think of it as a broad jump with a punch, not a high jump.
  • Follow the gazelle punch with a tight combination since you are now inside the opponent's range — a gazelle uppercut followed by a lead hook and cross is one of the most devastating three-punch sequences in boxing.

Conditioning Drills

  • Broad Jumps: 3 sets of 8 reps focusing on explosive horizontal leaping with a punch thrown at the landing point, building the specific plyometric power pattern the gazelle punch requires.
  • Box Jump to Punch: 3 sets of 10 jumps onto a 20-24 inch box, immediately throwing a combination upon landing to train the transition from leap to punching under fatigue.
  • Heavy Bag Lunges: 3 rounds of explosive forward lunges while throwing uppercuts into the heavy bag, simulating the forward momentum and punch timing of the actual technique.

Common Mistakes

  • Jumping too high instead of forward, which telegraphs the punch to the opponent and wastes energy on vertical height rather than distance-closing horizontal movement that actually reaches the target.
  • Landing off-balance with your weight too far forward or your feet too close together, leaving you unable to defend the counter or throw a follow-up combination with proper mechanics.
  • Throwing the punch before reaching the peak of the leap, which means your body weight has not fully committed to the forward direction and the punch arrives with arm power only instead of full body mass.
  • Attempting the gazelle punch from too far away, which forces a longer, slower leap that is easy to read and sidestep — the ideal launch distance is 2-3 feet maximum.
