When to Use
Use when the opponent has a tight, disciplined guard upstairs that blocks your head attacks. Going to the body first forces them to adjust their guard downward, creating a momentary opening for the head shot. This is especially effective in the early rounds to establish the body threat that pays dividends in later rounds when the opponent starts flinching.
Execution Steps
- Dip your level by bending deeply at the knees while keeping your back straight and chin tucked, then throw a sharp jab to the opponent's midsection — the level change must come from the legs, never from bending at the waist.
- Immediately spring back up explosively by driving through your quads, and throw a snapping jab to the head through the gap created by the opponent's lowered guard.
- Follow with a cross while their guard is still confused between levels — the opponent's brain takes 200-300 milliseconds to recalibrate guard height, and your cross arrives before they can readjust.
- Reset to your fighting stance with both hands up and your weight centered, ready to throw again or defend the counter.

Pro Tips
- The body jab doesn't need to be powerful — it just needs to make the opponent react by lowering their guard even slightly, which creates the opening for the real money shot upstairs.
- In the Soviet boxing system, this level change is combined with the pendulum step for a flowing attack where the dip generates forward momentum that powers both the body and head shots.
- Use this pattern early in the fight to establish the body attack threat, then exploit it in later rounds by feinting the body dip and going straight to the head when the opponent starts preemptively lowering their guard.
Conditioning Drills
- Level Change Squats: 3 sets of 20 rapid bodyweight squats, practicing the dip-and-rise motion while shadowboxing body-head jabs at the top and bottom of each rep.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds alternating body-head jab sequences every 10 seconds, focusing on the smooth knee-driven transition between levels with no pause at either height.
- Double-End Bag: 3 rounds practicing level changes against the moving target, dipping to hit the bag low then springing up to hit it high with continuous flow.
