When to Use
Use at close range when you can land the body hook clean without the opponent's elbow blocking the shot. The guard drops reflexively to protect the liver after the body impact, and the head hook arrives through the opened lane before the hands can return upward. This is a fight-ending combination when the body hook lands on the liver.
Execution Steps
- Dip 4-6 inches by bending the knees and throw a hard lead hook to the body targeting the liver area on the right side or the floating ribs, driving the punch through the target with full hip rotation from the lowered position.
- Without resetting your guard or pausing, spring upward explosively using the leg drive from your bent-knee position and throw a lead hook to the head, letting the upward momentum and hip rotation power the punch.
- Use the legs to drive the entire level change rather than just raising the arm — the power comes from the ground up through the knees, hips, and torso into the fist on both the low and high hooks.
- Return to guard with both hands tight to the chin and immediately move your head off the center line, as two hooks from the same side have left your lead side momentarily exposed to a counter.

Pro Tips
- Roy Jones Jr. threw this same-hand level change with supernatural speed — study how he used his legs as springs, dipping into the body hook and exploding upward into the head hook in one continuous motion.
- The body hook must genuinely hurt and cause involuntary pain response — a token tap will not force the guard down, so invest full rotational power in the body shot even though it is technically the setup punch.
- Practice the level change as a squat-to-stand motion with the hook attached — squat down and throw the body hook, stand up and throw the head hook, repeating until the motion becomes one fluid action.
Conditioning Drills
- Heavy Bag: 50 reps of body hook to head hook alternating sides, focusing on the explosive upward spring between the low and high hook — total 100 hooks per session.
- Goblet Squat to Hook: 3 sets of 15 reps squatting down with a weight, throwing the body hook motion on the rise, and the head hook motion at the top of the stand-up for specific movement patterning.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds of 3 minutes exaggerating the level change to build deep muscle memory for the squat-to-spring motion before adding speed and power.
