The 1-2-3, Roll, 3-2 (Mexican Combo)

The quintessential offense-defense-offense loop that defines Mexican boxing at its highest level. Throw a 1-2-3 to force the opponent into a counter, roll under their expected counter hook using the bob-and-weave motion, then immediately fire a 3-2 from the loaded position the roll creates. This sequence bridges two offensive combinations with a defensive action, creating relentless, flowing pressure that never gives the opponent a clean moment to set their feet and counter effectively. Canelo Alvarez, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Marco Antonio Barrera all used variations of this loop.

When to Use

Use against opponents who counter predictably after absorbing your initial combination with a hook. The roll between offensive phases evades their counter hook while simultaneously loading your body for the second attack wave, turning their counter-punch into the trigger for your next combination.

Execution Steps

  1. Throw a sharp 1-2-3 combination with genuine power and intent, making the three punches threatening enough to provoke the opponent's trained counter-punching response rather than a passive guard absorption.
  2. Immediately after the hook lands, bob and weave by bending the knees deeply and rolling your body under the expected counter hook, letting the incoming punch pass over your head while your weight shifts to the lead leg.
  3. As you rise from the roll, your lead side is naturally loaded from the rolling motion — fire a lead hook immediately from the loaded position, using the upward momentum of the rise to power the punch.
  4. Follow with a cross driven by full rear-hip rotation while the opponent is still recovering from their missed counter hook and processing the lead hook that just landed from a new angle.
  5. Reset your stance and repeat the entire loop — 1-2-3, roll, 3-2, roll — creating an infinite offensive cycle that never gives the opponent a clean beat to set their counter.

Coaching Cues

"Attack-roll-attack — three phases, infinite loops."
"The roll IS the reload — it loads your lead hand for the next hook."
"Non-stop pressure — never stop moving."
"Rise from the roll throwing."

Pro Tips

  • This is the hallmark of Mexican boxing — Canelo Alvarez, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., and Marco Antonio Barrera all used variations of this offense-roll-offense loop as their primary pressure-fighting framework.
  • The roll is not a rest or a passive defensive moment — it actively loads your lead side for the next hook, storing elastic energy in the torso rotation that you release immediately upon rising.
  • You can loop this combination indefinitely: 1-2-3, roll, 3-2, roll, 1-2-3, roll — creating a perpetual offensive machine that overwhelms opponents who expect discrete exchanges with pauses between combinations.

Conditioning Drills

  • Mitt Work: 5 rounds of 3 minutes where the coach throws a hook after the 1-2-3, the fighter rolls under it and immediately fires the 3-2 counter, building the full loop with realistic stimulus.
  • Heavy Bag: 3 rounds of 3 minutes practicing the full offensive loop continuously without stopping, building the cardiovascular endurance to maintain the perpetual pressure.
  • Bob and Weave Drill: 50 rolls with a lead hook at the top of each rise, building the roll-to-hook transition until it becomes a single automatic motion.

Which coaching cue belongs to The 1-2-3, Roll, 3-2 (Mexican Combo)?

Common Mistakes

  • Not rolling after the 1-2-3, instead standing still on the center line to admire your combination while the opponent's counter hook arrives cleanly because you forgot the defensive phase of the sequence.
  • Rolling too low and losing your balance base during the bob and weave, which makes the rise sluggish and removes the explosive upward drive needed to power the lead hook out of the roll.
  • The second combination (3-2) being weak and uncommitted after the energy expenditure of the first 1-2-3, wasting the perfect opening the roll created because you are too fatigued to capitalize with power.
