When to Use
Use when the opponent is focused on your jab and not expecting a lead hook opener. Especially effective after slipping outside a jab when your lead side is naturally loaded, or when you are already at close-to-mid range where the hook can land clean and the cross has a clear lane.
Execution Steps
- From your guard, throw a compact lead hook to the head or body without any wind-up, keeping the elbow at 90 degrees and using hip rotation rather than arm swing to generate force.
- Let the hook's rotational momentum naturally load your rear hip and shoulder, creating a pre-stretched position that stores elastic energy for the cross without requiring a conscious wind-up.
- Fire the cross straight down the center immediately while the opponent is still processing the lateral disruption of the hook, driving the rear foot into the ground and rotating the hip fully through.
- Return both hands to guard position simultaneously, tucking the chin behind the lead shoulder and keeping the elbows tight to protect against counters during the recovery.
Coaching Cues
Pro Tips
- Oscar De La Hoya used the 3-2 to devastating effect at close range, particularly the body hook to head cross variation that exploited the guard drop from a hard liver shot.
- Throw the hook to the body first, then the cross to the head for a level-change variation that forces two different guard adjustments in rapid succession.
- The 3-2 works best at close to mid range where the hook can land clean without overextending — at long range, the hook falls short and you eat the counter before the cross arrives.
Conditioning Drills
- Heavy Bag: 5 rounds of 3 minutes throwing only the 3-2, alternating between head-head and body-head targeting each round.
- Mitt Work: Coach holds for hook then cross in rapid succession, 3 rounds of 3 minutes with speed variations called randomly.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds of 3 minutes focusing on the seamless rotational transition from hook to cross without any pause or hitch between the punches.
