When to Use
Use primarily as a counter-attack after slipping or parrying a jab, when your rear hand is already loaded from the defensive motion. Leading with the cross is unconventional and catches opponents off guard who have been conditioned to expect your jab first, making this combination a powerful surprise weapon.
Execution Steps
- Fire a straight cross directly through the opponent's guard to initiate the sequence, committing full hip rotation to drive power while using the forward momentum to close distance.
- Let the cross's rotation naturally load your lead side, then throw the lead hook tight and compact to the head or body, catching the opponent as they react to the straight punch they just absorbed.
- The hook's rotation reloads the rear hip and shoulder — fire the second cross through the opening created by the previous two punches while the opponent's guard is still recovering from the hook.
- Return to guard immediately and move your head off the center line, because after three punches you are stationary and the opponent will counter the last punch they registered.
Coaching Cues
Pro Tips
- Gennady Golovkin used the 2-3-2 as his signature counter sequence after parrying the jab — the parry loaded his rear hand, and the three-punch chain followed naturally from that loaded position.
- The second cross is the money punch in this combination — the first cross and hook exist primarily to set it up, so save your maximum power for the third punch in the sequence.
- Practice this combination slowly at 50% speed to build the muscle memory for the triple-rotation before adding speed and power, because the three consecutive rotations are biomechanically demanding.
Conditioning Drills
- Heavy Bag: 3 rounds of 3 minutes focused on the fluidity of the triple rotation, starting slow and building speed as the chain becomes automatic.
- Russian Twists: 3 sets of 20 reps with a medicine ball to build the rotational core endurance needed for three consecutive torso rotations under load.
- Mitt Work: 3 rounds of 3 minutes with the coach calling speed variations — slow-controlled, medium-pace, and full-speed to build adaptation across tempos.
