When to Use
Use immediately after finishing any combination inside the pocket. Instead of staying in front of the opponent where they can counter, step to an angle (usually to your lead-hand side) to create a safe exit. Critical against counter-punchers who time their biggest shots for the moment after you finish throwing.
Execution Steps
- Finish your combination (e.g., 1-2-3) with full commitment on the last punch, keeping your weight centered and your legs ready to drive the exit step rather than being planted and flat..
- On the last punch, simultaneously begin stepping your lead foot 12-18 inches to the outside of the opponent, initiating the angle change before the punch is even fully retracted.
- Push off your rear foot explosively and pivot on the lead foot ball, swinging the rear leg around to a 30-45 degree angle from your original position while keeping your hands high.
- End balanced in your fighting stance, now facing the opponent from a new angle where their center line is offset — you can see both their hands but they have to turn to find you.
- Reset your guard immediately and assess the situation: if the opponent is still facing forward, you have a free shot from the angle; if they've adjusted, you've at least avoided the counter.

Pro Tips
- Vasyl Lomachenko is the undisputed master of the exit angle — study his fights frame by frame to see how he begins the angle step during the last punch, not after it.
- Always exit to the outside of the opponent's lead hand, which positions you away from their power hand and forces them to turn completely around to face you, buying you time and creating openings.
- The angle-out is not just an escape — it immediately sets up your next attack from a blind angle that the opponent cannot defend without first locating you, giving you a free first punch.
Conditioning Drills
- Cone Drills: Throw a 1-2-3 at a bag, then immediately step to a cone placed at 45 degrees, 4 sets of 10 reps alternating exit side.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds where every single combination must end with an angle-out step — no exceptions, build the habit until it's automatic.
- Partner Drill: Throw combos on mitts and pivot out before the mitt holder can touch your shoulder, 3 rounds of 3 minutes.
