When to Use
Use when the opponent is circling, retreating, or attempting to stay on the outside. Instead of chasing them around the ring and wasting energy, cut the angle by stepping laterally to herd them into the ropes or corner. Critical against outfighters and movers who rely on ring space to operate.
Execution Steps
- Read the opponent's circling direction by watching their hips and lead foot, then anticipate where they want to go rather than reacting to where they already are.
- Step laterally in the same direction they are circling, but on a shorter intercepting path that cuts off their escape angle before they can complete the circle.
- Use small, controlled 4-6 inch steps to systematically herd them toward the ropes or corner, maintaining your stance width and balance throughout the pursuit.
- Throw the jab consistently while cutting off the ring to maintain offensive pressure, disrupt their footwork rhythm, and prevent them from planting their feet to throw back.
- Once they are trapped against the ropes or in a corner with limited lateral escape, unload your prepared combinations while keeping your feet positioned to cut off any remaining exit angles.

Pro Tips
- Think of the ring as a geometric problem: you move on the shorter chord of the circle while the opponent is forced to travel the longer arc, meaning you cover less distance to arrive at the same interception point.
- Use the jab as a directional "fence" while cutting off — throw it at their lead shoulder to block the direction you don't want them to go, physically steering them toward the ropes.
- Study film of Julio César Chávez and Joe Louis — both fighters combined patient cut-off footwork with constant jab pressure to systematically trap faster opponents who initially seemed impossible to corner.
Conditioning Drills
- Ring Movement Drills: Partner tries to escape around the ring while you practice cutting them off, 5 rounds of 2 minutes with role switching.
- Agility Ladder: Forward, lateral, and diagonal patterns combining all three movement planes, 4 sets of 30 seconds at maximum speed.
- Shadowboxing with visualization: 3 rounds imagining a circling opponent and practicing cutting angles with jab pressure at each interception point.
