Gazelle Punch-Hook-Cross

An explosive entry combination that uses a leaping uppercut to close distance with devastating upward power. The gazelle punch bridges a gap that normal footwork cannot close, arriving with the full momentum of the forward leap behind it. The hook catches the stunned opponent before they can recover from the initial shock, and the cross finishes through whatever remains of their disrupted guard. Mike Tyson made the gazelle punch his signature entry, launching from his peek-a-boo crouch to cover three feet of distance in a single explosive bound.

When to Use

Use to close distance explosively against a retreating opponent who keeps backing up to maintain a safe range that your normal step-jab cannot breach. The gazelle punch bridges the gap with a single athletic leap, and the follow-up punches capitalize on the opponent's shock and backward momentum before they can set their feet to counter.

Execution Steps

  1. Identify the distance gap between you and the retreating opponent, then load your legs by bending both knees deeply and lowering your center of gravity like a sprinter in the starting blocks.
  2. Explode forward with the gazelle punch — a leaping uppercut that uses the full momentum of the forward bound to drive the fist upward through the opponent's chin, traveling both forward and upward simultaneously.
  3. Land with both feet balanced in your fighting stance and immediately throw a lead hook before the opponent can recover from the gazelle punch's impact, using the landing's absorption to power the hip rotation.
  4. The hook's rotation loads your rear hip and shoulder for the cross — fire it straight through the center of the disorganized guard while the opponent is still processing the first two punches from this unexpected entry.
  5. Reset your stance and either continue with additional punches if the opponent is hurt, or retreat to rebuild the distance for another entry if they recovered their guard.

Coaching Cues

"Leap-land-unleash — three beats, maximum violence."
"Throw the hook the instant your feet touch ground."
"Full commitment — this is all-or-nothing."
"Forward, not upward — leap INTO them."

Pro Tips

  • This was Mike Tyson's signature entry technique — he launched the gazelle punch from his peek-a-boo crouch, covering enormous distance in a single bound and arriving with devastating upward power that lifted opponents off their feet.
  • The gazelle punch must land clean or at least occupy the opponent's guard by forcing them to absorb the impact — if it misses entirely, you land off-balance at close range with no defensive protection.
  • Commit fully to this entry — the gazelle combination is an all-or-nothing attack that sacrifices defensive positioning for maximum offensive impact, so only use it when you are confident in the timing.

Conditioning Drills

  • Broad Jumps to Bag: 3 sets of 10 reps leaping forward from outside range and throwing the full gazelle-hook-cross combination on landing, building the specific athletic leap pattern.
  • Plyometric Box Jumps: 3 sets of 10 explosive box jumps to build the leg power and fast-twitch muscle recruitment needed for the distance-covering leap of the gazelle punch.
  • Heavy Bag Blitz: 5 rounds of 1 minute all-out blitz entries practicing the full gazelle-hook-cross at maximum power and speed, with 1-minute rest between rounds.

Common Mistakes

  • Landing off-balance from the gazelle punch because the leap was too high or too extended, which makes the follow-up hook arrive from a compromised position without proper hip rotation or foot grounding.
  • Pausing between the gazelle punch and the hook, which wastes the critical shock window — the opponent recovers their guard within half a second of the initial impact, so the hook must be immediate.
  • Leaping too high into the air instead of driving forward horizontally, which reduces the distance-closing effectiveness and makes you airborne and defenseless for a longer duration than necessary.
