When to Use
Use when you want to score without trading in the pocket. Step in with your combination ready, fire immediately upon arriving in range, and retreat before the opponent can respond. Ideal against slower fighters, pressure fighters, and in situations where you have a reach advantage and want to exploit it.
Execution Steps
- Start at the outside edge of your jab range where the opponent cannot reach you without stepping forward, establishing a safe "home base" position that you will return to after each attack.
- Quickly step forward 8-12 inches with your lead foot while simultaneously dragging the rear foot, closing the distance in one sharp step-drag motion that does not telegraph your intention.
- Throw your combination (typically 1-2 or 1-2-3) immediately upon landing in range — the punches should begin before your front foot is fully planted, using the forward momentum to add snap.
- Immediately push off the ball of your lead foot and retreat to your original starting position using a sharp reverse step-drag, making the exit even faster than the entry.
- Reset your guard fully at distance, check the opponent's reaction, and decide whether to re-enter, circle laterally, or feint to set up the next entry.

Pro Tips
- Thomas Hearns used in-and-out movement to deliver his devastating right hand from outside while being nearly impossible to counter because his exit was faster than his entry.
- Vary the timing unpredictably: sometimes come in fast, sometimes stalk slowly then explode, and sometimes feint the entry without committing — this prevents the opponent from setting traps for your rhythm.
- Add lateral movement to the retreat by stepping slightly to one side as you exit — this prevents the opponent from chasing you in a straight line and sets up an angle for your next entry.
Conditioning Drills
- Sprint Intervals: 5-second explosive sprints forward followed by immediate backpedaling, 6 sets with 10-second rest between sets.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds of 3 minutes focused entirely on in-and-out entries with combinations, throwing no more than 3 punches per entry.
- Jump Rope: 3 rounds of 3 minutes building the calf endurance and elastic rebound needed for constant forward-backward movement.
