When to Use
Use as your bread-and-butter combination in every situation — starting rounds, measuring distance, establishing your jab, building combinations, and scoring points. The 1-2 is the foundation upon which every longer combination is constructed, and it remains effective at every range from long distance to mid-range.
Execution Steps
- Throw a sharp jab directly at the opponent's face with a quick snap of the lead shoulder, extending fully through the target while keeping the rear hand glued to the chin for protection.
- As the jab begins to retract, immediately initiate the rear hip rotation that powers the cross — the hip turn should begin before the jab hand has fully returned to the guard position.
- Drive the cross straight down the center line, right behind the path the jab just cleared, rotating the rear foot on the ball and driving the rear hip fully through for maximum force transfer.
- Both punches should feel like one fluid connected motion, not two separate events — the jab's retraction and the cross's extension overlap in time to eliminate the gap between them.
- Return both hands to guard position simultaneously, rotating back to your defensive stance with chin tucked and elbows tight to the ribs.
Coaching Cues
Pro Tips
- The jab is the key to the entire combination — if the jab is sharp and threatening, the cross will land clean because the opponent is still processing the first punch when the second arrives.
- Vary the timing deliberately: sometimes throw a fast jab with a delayed cross, sometimes double the jab before the cross, and sometimes reverse the timing to keep opponents from calibrating your rhythm.
- Target the jab at the gloves or forehead to momentarily blind the opponent and block their vision, then throw the cross to the chin through the gap their raised guard creates between the elbows.
Conditioning Drills
- Heavy Bag Rounds: Focus exclusively on the 1-2 for entire 3-minute rounds, 5 rounds minimum, emphasizing the fluid transition between jab and cross.
- Mitt Work: Have a coach call 1-2s at random intervals mixed with single jabs, 3 rounds of 3 minutes to build reactive combination throwing.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds of 3 minutes throwing only the 1-2, focusing entirely on hip rotation fluidity and the seamless connection between the two punches.
