When to Use
Use when the opponent is blocking or slipping your single jab effectively. The double jab overloads their defensive reaction by forcing them to respond twice in rapid succession, creating a gap in timing and guard position for the cross. Excellent for taller fighters controlling range and establishing jab dominance.
Execution Steps
- Throw the first jab at long range with moderate speed to measure distance and force the opponent to acknowledge your lead hand — this jab is information gathering, not power.
- Step in 4-6 inches with the lead foot and throw a second, faster and sharper jab to a slightly different target, disrupting the opponent's guard adjustment and momentarily blocking their vision.
- Immediately follow with the cross while the opponent is still processing the second jab — the cross should arrive before their guard can reset from the double jab's disruption.
- Return both hands to guard position and reset your distance, either stepping back to long range or following up with additional punches if the cross landed clean.

Pro Tips
- Target the first jab to the chest or shoulder to lower their guard's focal point, aim the second jab at the eyes or forehead to blind them, then drive the cross to the chin through the gap.
- The double jab becomes devastating when combined with the pendulum step — bounce forward with each jab so you close distance while throwing, arriving in perfect range for the cross.
- Occasionally throw three or four jabs to establish a pattern of volume, then surprise the opponent with the cross earlier than expected — pattern disruption is the key to landing clean power shots.
Conditioning Drills
- Jab Ladder: Start with 1 jab then cross, then 2 jabs then cross, up to 4 jabs then cross, then back down, 3 rounds of 3 minutes.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds of 3 minutes focused on varying the speed, height, and intensity of each jab in the double sequence.
- Speed Bag: 3 rounds of 3 minutes building the hand speed rhythm and shoulder endurance required for rapid successive jabs.
