When to Use
Use to control distance dynamically against both aggressive and retreating opponents, to set up attacks by bouncing into range on the forward phase, and to make yourself a harder target with constant motion. Fundamental when facing counterpunchers who rely on you standing still to time their shots.
Execution Steps
- Position your weight on the balls of both feet with heels slightly elevated, maintaining a slight bend in both knees to create the spring mechanism that powers each bounce.
- Keep a slightly wider than normal stance (roughly shoulder-width-plus-two-inches) to maintain lateral stability while bouncing, preventing the feet from drifting together.
- Use small, simultaneous pushes from both legs to bound forward and backward in 6-8 inch increments, keeping the feet close to the canvas and moving as a single coordinated unit.
- Maintain a steady rhythm that mirrors the opponent's movement, then break the rhythm deliberately when you want to attack or create a timing disruption.

Pro Tips
- Throw the jab exactly as your front foot lands on the forward bounce — the ground reaction force adds snap and power to the punch while the forward momentum closes distance simultaneously.
- Change rhythm occasionally by holding the forward position for a split beat or doubling the backward bounce to break the opponent's timing and prevent them from calibrating your distance.
- Keep the upper body completely relaxed with all tension concentrated in the calves and ankles — upper body tension wastes energy and slows your punching speed during the bounce.
Conditioning Drills
- Jump Rope (Double Unders): Extreme calf endurance and elastic rebound power, 4 sets of 30 seconds with 30-second rest between sets.
- Plyometric Bounds: Forward and backward broad jumps to build bilateral leg drive, 3 sets of 10 reps each direction.
- Shadowboxing (footwork only): 3 rounds of 3 minutes of pure pendulum bouncing with jabs thrown on every third forward bounce.
