When to Use
Use to close distance against a retreating opponent or one hiding behind a high guard that blocks your straight punches. The overhand arcs over the top of the raised guard to land on the crown or behind the ear, and the hook punishes the lateral reaction while they are still processing the overhand's impact.
Execution Steps
- Throw a sharp jab to fix the opponent's guard in position and establish the straight-line threat, forcing them to commit their hands high and forward where the overhand can clear them.
- Step forward aggressively and slightly to the outside with the lead foot, throwing the overhand in a wide downward arc over the top of their raised guard, committing full bodyweight to the distance-closing leap.
- As the overhand lands on the crown or behind the ear — or the opponent reacts by ducking or covering — throw a tight lead hook to catch the lateral opening their defensive adjustment created.
- Return to guard and reset distance, or if the overhand stunned them, continue with additional hooks and crosses while they are still recovering from the impact.

Pro Tips
- Manny Pacquiao used this combination from the southpaw stance to close distance against bigger opponents, using his explosive footwork to bridge the gap and his left overhand to crash through high guards.
- The overhand must be thrown with full commitment and bodyweight — half-hearted overhands lack the arcing trajectory needed to clear the guard and become predictable arm punches that miss and leave you exposed.
- If the overhand misses, the hook becomes your insurance policy — throw it regardless of whether the overhand landed, because the opponent's reaction to the overhand will open a lateral target for the hook.
Conditioning Drills
- Heavy Bag: 5 rounds of 3 minutes practicing the full distance-closing entry from outside range, starting two steps back from the bag and closing with the jab-overhand-hook.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds of 3 minutes emphasizing the outside step during the overhand, exaggerating the lateral movement to build the angling habit.
- Med Ball Slams: 3 sets of 15 overhead slams mimicking the arcing downward power of the overhand, developing the same over-the-top trajectory in a loaded exercise.
