When to Use
Use when inside the pocket, after slipping a cross (your body is naturally loaded), or when the opponent tucks their chin too low. Effective after a body jab gets them to drop their guard.
Execution Steps
- Dip slightly by bending your knees 3-4 inches — bend at the knees, not the waist, keeping your spine vertical and your eyes level with the opponent's chest so you maintain full vision.
- Lower your lead hand only to chest level while keeping the elbow tight against your ribs — dropping it further telegraphs the punch and opens a direct lane to your chin.
- Drive explosively upward using your legs like a leg press, simultaneously rotating your lead hip forward — the legs generate 70-80% of the uppercut's power.
- Punch straight up toward the ceiling, keeping the fist path tight to your own body until the final moment of extension — the punch should feel like a piston firing vertically, not a scooping motion.
- Snap back to guard immediately by pulling the elbow down and resetting your knee bend — staying extended leaves you tall and exposed.

Pro Tips
- The power comes from the legs driving upward, not the arm — think of your arm as a rigid connector that transfers the explosive force your legs generate into the opponent's chin.
- Set it up with a body jab to get the opponent to lower their guard and shift their attention downward — then come up the middle with the uppercut through the gap they just created.
- Keep the punch path tight to your own body until the final moment of extension — this compact trajectory makes the uppercut nearly invisible to the opponent until it's already arriving under their chin.
Conditioning Drills
- Goblet Squats: 4 sets of 15 with a 25-35lb kettlebell — builds the quad and glute drive needed to generate explosive upward power from the crouched position.
- Dumbbell Uppercut Presses: 3 sets of 12 per arm with 10-15lb dumbbells — combines the upward pressing motion with hip rotation to train the exact neuromuscular pattern of the uppercut.
- Double-end Bag Uppercuts: 3 rounds of 3 minutes — practice timing the vertical punch against a moving target to develop the accuracy and timing needed for a punch that has virtually no margin for error.
