Slip-3-2 (Counter Sequence)

A pure counter-punching combination built on the defensive slip. Slip outside the opponent's jab to evade the punch and simultaneously load your lead side, then immediately fire a lead hook from the loaded position while the opponent is still extended and exposed. The cross follows naturally from the hook's rotation while the opponent is recovering their retracted hand. Juan Manuel Marquez built his entire Hall of Fame career on precisely this slip-counter principle, punishing every jab thrown at him.

When to Use

Use against predictable jabbers who throw their jab on a consistent rhythm or from a telegraphed position. The slip takes you off the center line where the jab travels, the hook is already loaded from the slipping motion's torso rotation, and the cross drives through the exposed center while the opponent's lead hand is still retracting.

Execution Steps

  1. Read the incoming jab by watching the opponent's lead shoulder for the telltale forward rotation, then slip outside by bending the knees and rotating the torso away from the punch's trajectory.
  2. The slip's torso rotation naturally loads your lead hip and shoulder with stored elastic energy — fire the hook immediately from this loaded position, using the pre-stretched muscles to generate power without any wind-up.
  3. The hook's lateral rotation loads your rear hip for the cross — drive it straight down the center while the opponent is still retracting their jab and their guard has a gap on the power-hand side.
  4. Return to guard with both hands and either exit to a new angle or reset the counter-punching stance to wait for the next jab to repeat the sequence.

Coaching Cues

"Slip loads the hook — fire it instantly."
"Don't wait after the slip — counter immediately or lose the window."
"The cross follows while they're still reaching and exposed."
"Small slip, big counter."

Pro Tips

  • Juan Manuel Marquez built his entire Hall of Fame career on slip-counter combinations exactly like this — study how he read jabs by watching the shoulder and countered within milliseconds of the slip.
  • The counter must be immediate and automatic — any perceptible delay between the slip and the hook lets the opponent recover their guard and retract to safety, closing the window that only exists for a fraction of a second.
  • Practice timing on the double-end bag, slipping the bag's rebound and immediately firing the 3-2 counter, building the reactive timing that transfers directly to live sparring against jabbing opponents.

Conditioning Drills

  • Slip Rope: 3 rounds of 3 minutes passing under the rope with a slip motion, then immediately throwing the 3-2 on a nearby heavy bag to build the slip-to-counter transition.
  • Partner Drill: 3 rounds of 3 minutes where a partner throws light jabs on a rhythm and you slip outside and counter with the hook-cross, building timing with a live stimulus.
  • Double-End Bag: 5 rounds of 3 minutes slipping the bag's rebound and firing the 3-2 counter, developing the reactive counter-punching timing that is the foundation of this combination.

Which coaching cue belongs to the Slip-3-2 (Counter Sequence)?

Common Mistakes

  • Slipping the jab and then pausing before countering, which wastes the loaded position the slip created and gives the opponent time to retract their jab and reset their guard before the counter arrives.
  • Slipping too far laterally and moving out of counter-punching range, making the hook fall short or requiring a step forward that telegraphs the counter and eliminates the timing advantage.
  • The hook being too wide and loopy from the slipped position because the torso rotation created excessive angular momentum, exposing the chin on the lead side during the extended swing.
