When to Use
Use strictly inside the pocket when the opponent is shelling up and you are close enough to land hooks without extending your arms. The hook-uppercut-hook covers lateral, vertical, and lateral angles in a triangle pattern, making it nearly impossible to defend all three directions simultaneously.
Execution Steps
- Throw a tight lead hook to disrupt the guard laterally, targeting the temple or ear and keeping the arc compact since you are operating at close range where wide hooks miss behind the opponent.
- Dip 3-4 inches by bending the knees and throw a rear uppercut straight upward under the guard, using leg drive from the lowered position to power the punch through the gap the hook created.
- As the uppercut lifts their chin and disrupts their guard vertically, spring upward and throw a second lead hook to the head with maximum power, catching the opponent while their hands are displaced high.
- Return to guard with both hands tight to the chin and move your head off the center line, as three close-range punches have left you stationary in the danger zone.

Pro Tips
- Mike Tyson threw devastating variations of the 3-6-3 from his peek-a-boo stance throughout his early career, using his shorter stature to generate upward leverage on the uppercut against taller opponents.
- The second hook should carry your maximum power because the first hook and uppercut exist primarily to disrupt the guard and create the opening — invest your hardest shot in the final punch.
- Alternate body and head targets on the two hooks for maximum defensive confusion: throw the first hook to the body to drop the guard low, the uppercut through the middle, and the final hook to the now-exposed head.
Conditioning Drills
- Heavy Bag (close range): Stand nose-to-bag and drill the full 3-6-3 sequence for 3 rounds of 3 minutes, building compact form under realistic inside-fighting distance.
- Dumbbell Complex: Hook motion to uppercut motion to hook motion with 5-10 lb dumbbells, 3 sets of 12 complete sequences to build the specific rotational pathway.
- Partner Body Sparring: Practice the 3-6-3 sequence at 50% controlled power with a partner wearing a body protector, 3 rounds of 2 minutes building timing and distance calibration.
