Why This Matters for Boxing

Advance and retreat on a straight line — the foundation of boxing movement. Before you can move in angles, you need to master going forward and backward while maintaining your stance.

How To Do It

  1. 1Find a straight line on the floor (or use tape).
  2. 2Stand on the line in your fighting stance.
  3. 3Step-drag forward along the line.
  4. 4Step-drag backward along the line.
  5. 5Maintain your stance width and balance throughout.

Pro Tips

  • Lead foot goes first when advancing; rear foot goes first when retreating.
  • Keep your weight centered — don't lean forward or back.
  • Add punches once the footwork is smooth.
