Body-Body-Head (Rip Attack)

Two hard body shots followed by a finishing head shot, using accumulated pain to force an involuntary guard drop. The double body attack targets the ribs and liver to create genuine distress, forcing the opponent's hands downward reflexively to protect the damaged area. The head shot capitalizes on this forced guard adjustment. Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. built his entire legendary career on this body-attack principle, wearing opponents down through 12 rounds of systematic body punishment.

When to Use

Use when the opponent is trapped against the ropes or in the corner with limited escape angles. Two consecutive body shots force a guard adjustment that creates a wide-open head shot opportunity. This combination becomes devastatingly effective in the later rounds when accumulated body work has made the opponent hypersensitive to rib and liver shots.

Execution Steps

  1. Throw a hard lead hook to the body targeting the liver area on the right side or the floating ribs, bending the knees to get under the guard and driving the punch through the target with full hip rotation.
  2. Immediately follow with a rear hook or cross to the opposite side of the body, attacking from a different angle to force the opponent to adjust their guard laterally while still processing the pain from the first body shot.
  3. As their guard drops to protect the damaged body area, spring upward explosively using your legs and throw a lead hook or overhand cross to the head, catching them while their hands are still low.
  4. Return to guard with both hands high and assess whether the head shot landed clean enough to follow up or whether another body-body-head cycle is needed to accumulate more damage.

Coaching Cues

"Rip the body twice, then go upstairs for the finish."
"Make them bring the hands down — the body shots must hurt."
"The head shot is the payoff — everything before it is investment."
"Stay low through the body shots, explode up for the head."

Pro Tips

  • Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. built his entire career on the body-body-head principle, throwing hundreds of body shots per fight to systematically destroy his opponents' ability to keep their hands up in the championship rounds.
  • The two body shots must be genuinely painful and damaging — token body taps will not force the involuntary guard drop needed to open the head, so commit full rotational power to each body punch.
  • Alternate sides on the body shots for maximum guard disruption — lead hook to the liver on one side, rear hook to the ribs on the other — forcing the opponent to protect two different areas before the head shot arrives.

Conditioning Drills

  • Heavy Bag: Mark body and head zones with tape, drill the body-body-head sequence for 5 rounds of 3 minutes, counting clean strikes on each zone.
  • Level Change Circuit: 3 sets of 20 squats with shadow punches — body hook at the bottom, body hook in the middle, head hook at the top — building the specific up-down motion pattern.
  • Body Sparring: 3 rounds of 2 minutes of controlled body-only sparring to build the instinct and distance calibration for body punching before adding the head-shot finisher.

Common Mistakes

  • Body shots being light and ineffective taps that do not create genuine pain or force the guard downward, making the head shot predictable because the opponent's hands never actually dropped.
  • Telegraphing the head shot by visibly looking upward at the target before throwing, which alerts the opponent to the level change and gives them time to raise their guard back to protect the chin.
  • Rising too quickly from the body level without using the leg drive to power the upward motion, which makes the head shot arrive fast but without the rotational power needed to do real damage.
