Check Hook

A defensive counter-offensive technique where you throw a lead hook while simultaneously pivoting away from the opponent's attack line, turning your body to safety as the punch lands. The check hook is devastatingly effective against aggressive fighters who rush forward recklessly because they run directly into the punch with their own forward momentum adding to the impact force.

When to Use

Use against aggressive pressure fighters who charge in with their weight moving forward recklessly. The check hook punishes forward momentum — the opponent literally runs into the punch while you pivot to a safe angle. Time it when they lunge with a wide jab or rush inside without proper head movement.

Execution Steps

  1. As the opponent charges forward, prepare to pivot by shifting your weight onto the ball of your lead foot, keeping your knees bent and your rear hand up to protect against their straight punch.
  2. Throw a tight, compact lead hook aimed at the chin as you begin the pivot, timing the punch to land at the moment when the opponent's forward momentum is greatest and they are most committed to their advance.
  3. Simultaneously swing your rear foot in a wide arc behind you like a compass needle, rotating your body 90 degrees around your anchored lead foot to move your head and body completely off the attack line.
  4. The hook connects as the opponent runs into it, combining your rotational punching power with their forward momentum to create an impact force far greater than either component alone.
  5. Complete the full pivot so you end up at a 90-degree angle to their original attack direction, facing their exposed flank with your hands up and ready to follow up with a straight right or disengage.

Coaching Cues

"Hook AND pivot — same time."
"They run into it."
"Full pivot — don't go halfway."
"Rear foot swings like a compass."

Pro Tips

  • Floyd Mayweather Jr. made the check hook his signature punch — study his famous check hook against Ricky Hatton that dropped him, landing precisely as Hatton lunged forward with reckless aggression.
  • Time the check hook when the opponent throws a wide, committed jab or rushes inside without proper head movement — their extended arm and forward weight make them maximally vulnerable to the lateral hook.
  • Follow the check hook immediately with a straight right hand since you're now positioned at a perfect 45-degree angle to their exposed chin with a clear lane for the cross down the center.

Conditioning Drills

  • Pivot Drills: Practice pivoting 90 degrees on your lead foot while throwing a tight hook, performing 50 reps per side per session to build muscle memory for the combined motion.
  • Reaction Ball: 3 rounds of 2 minutes to build the visual tracking and timing needed to react to an approaching opponent with precise pivoting footwork.
  • Partner Drill: Have a partner rush in at controlled speed while you practice the check hook timing for 4 rounds of 2 minutes, gradually increasing their approach speed as your timing improves.

Common Mistakes

  • Pivoting before throwing the punch, which means the hook misses because you've already moved away — the hook must land DURING the pivot, not before or after, for the timing to connect.
  • Throwing a wide, sweeping hook with a looping arc instead of keeping it tight and compact — a wide hook takes too long to arrive and gives the charging opponent time to adjust or duck under it.
  • Not committing to the full 90-degree pivot and stopping halfway, which leaves you square to the opponent's forward momentum with no angle advantage and your back partially turned.
