When to Use
Use to maintain distance control while still committing power from the rear hand. The trailing jab acts as both a scoring punch and an exit strategy, keeping you at long range and preventing the opponent from closing distance to counter your cross.
Execution Steps
- Throw a sharp jab to occupy the opponent's guard and create the opening for the cross, stepping forward slightly to close into power range while keeping the rear hand loaded.
- Follow immediately with a cross through the opening, rotating the rear hip fully to drive maximum power through the gap the jab created in the opponent's guard.
- As you retract the cross, simultaneously throw another jab while stepping back 6-8 inches with the rear foot, using the jab to cover your retreat and score one final point.
- Use the trailing jab to physically create distance by extending fully and pushing the opponent's attention forward while your feet carry you backward to safe range.

Pro Tips
- Lennox Lewis used the 1-2-1 to maintain his massive 84-inch reach advantage, throwing the trailing jab while stepping backward to ensure opponents could never close the distance gap after his cross.
- Vary the trailing jab's target: throw it to the body if the opponent raises their guard high in reaction to the cross, or aim it at the forehead to push them backward and create additional separation.
- The 1-2-1 is the outfighter's bread and butter — it lets you commit a power shot while always having an exit plan built into the combination structure itself.
Conditioning Drills
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds of 3 minutes throwing only the 1-2-1 with full footwork in-and-out, emphasizing the synchronization of the trailing jab with the backward step.
- Heavy Bag: 3 rounds of 3 minutes focusing on the snap and speed of the trailing jab, which must be as sharp as the opening jab despite being the third punch.
- Partner Drill: Throw the 1-2-1 on mitts then immediately exit to a 45-degree angle, 3 rounds of 3 minutes building the exit pattern into the combination.
