The 1-2-3 (Jab-Cross-Hook)

The classic three-punch combination that forms the backbone of offensive boxing. The jab and cross drive straight down the center to create openings, and the lead hook capitalizes on the opponent's natural reaction to straight punches by attacking from the lateral angle their guard leaves exposed. The biomechanical beauty of the 1-2-3 is that each punch's rotation naturally loads the next, creating a self-reinforcing kinetic chain.

When to Use

Use when you have the opponent backing up, pinned against the ropes, or when you want to end a combination with a potential knockout punch. The hook catches opponents who shell up against straight punches because their guard collapses toward the center, leaving the sides exposed for the incoming hook.

Execution Steps

  1. Throw a sharp jab to the face with full extension and shoulder rotation, occupying the opponent's high guard and forcing them to react centrally while your body begins its forward momentum.
  2. Immediately follow with a cross, rotating the rear hip fully through the target to drive maximum power down the center line and create the rotational momentum that will load the hook.
  3. As the cross rotates your body to the lead side, let that stored rotational energy flow naturally into the lead hook — the hook should feel like a continuation, not a separate initiation.
  4. Throw the lead hook tight and compact, pivoting on the ball of the lead foot with the elbow at 90 degrees, targeting the temple, jaw, or ear of the opponent while keeping the rear hand high for protection.
  5. Return to guard with both hands simultaneously, immediately moving your head off the center line because the opponent will counter the last punch they saw.

Coaching Cues

"1-2 opens the door, 3 closes it."
"Let the cross rotation load the hook — don't muscle it."
"Move your head off center after the hook lands."
"The hook is tight and compact, not wide."

Pro Tips

  • The hook should feel like a natural and inevitable continuation of the cross's rotation — if you have to consciously "start" the hook as a separate action, you are breaking the kinetic chain.
  • Vary the hook's target between head and body to keep the opponent guessing: hook to the head when they drop their hands, hook to the body when they raise their guard high after the cross.
  • After the 1-2-3, immediately move your head off the center line by slipping or stepping to an angle, because the natural counter to a 1-2-3 is a straight right hand down the center.

Conditioning Drills

  • Heavy Bag: Focus on the 1-2-3 flow for full 3-minute rounds, 5 rounds minimum, emphasizing the seamless rotational chain from cross to hook.
  • Mitt Work: 1-2-3 on the mitts with the coach calling head or body for the hook randomly, 3 rounds of 3 minutes building reactive targeting.
  • Shadowboxing in front of a mirror: 3 rounds of 3 minutes watching for technical breakdowns in hand position, hip rotation, and guard maintenance.

Common Mistakes

  • Rushing the hook and sacrificing proper elbow angle and hip rotation, which turns it into a weak arm punch that lacks knockout power and exposes your chin during the swing.
  • Not using the cross's rotational momentum to naturally load the hook, instead throwing the hook as a separate arm-only punch that wastes the kinetic energy the cross created.
  • Dropping the rear hand after throwing the cross, which removes your defensive coverage on the power-hand side and leaves you wide open for a counter right hand during the hook.
