When to Use
Use when under heavy fire and you need to survive, when closing distance against a longer fighter, or to weather a storm before countering.
Execution Steps
- Tuck your chin firmly down to your chest, pressing it against the top of your sternum — this position protects the chin from uppercuts and hooks that travel upward, and braces the neck muscles to absorb impact.
- Bring both gloves up to your eyebrows and temples, pressing them firmly against the sides of your head — your knuckles should be at forehead level, creating a solid wall that covers from the eyebrows down to the cheekbones.
- Squeeze your elbows tight against your ribs to protect the body — any gap between your elbows and ribs creates an opening for body hooks, and any gap between your gloves creates a slot for uppercuts.
- Look through the narrow gap between your gloves, not over them — peering over the top lifts your chin and exposes the jaw, which defeats the entire purpose of the high guard.
Coaching Cues
Pro Tips
- Actively "catch" punches with micro-movements of the gloves rather than holding a rigid, static guard — small adjustments to meet each punch reduce the impact force by up to 40% compared to absorbing it passively.
- Treat the high guard as a temporary position, not a fighting style — block 2-3 punches, then immediately counter with a jab or hook to prevent the opponent from building confidence and rhythm against your shell.
- Keep your core braced and exhale sharply through clenched teeth when body shots land below the elbows — an unbraced core absorbs the full force of a body shot, while a braced core distributes the impact across the abdominal wall.
- Use the high guard specifically when closing distance — walk forward behind the shell, taking small steps to push the opponent toward the ropes where you can open up with combinations.
Conditioning Drills
- Static Dumbbell Guard Holds: Hold 5lb dumbbells in high guard position for 3 rounds of 3 minutes — builds the shoulder and bicep endurance to maintain the guard position without fatigue causing the hands to drop in late rounds.
- RKC Planks: 3 sets of 30-45 seconds with maximum full-body tension — squeeze your core and glutes dynamically to build the impact-resistant bracing pattern needed to absorb body shots below the elbows.
- Farmers Walks: 3 sets of 60-second walks with heavy dumbbells — builds the grip, forearm, and structural endurance that prevents the guard from collapsing under sustained punching volume.
