Slip Outside

A defensive maneuver where you move your head off the center line to the outside of an incoming straight punch by crunching the obliques laterally. The slip positions your head on the safer side of the opponent's punching arm, away from their rear hand follow-up. More than a pure defense move, the outside slip is an offensive weapon in disguise — it loads your rear side for a devastating counter cross while making the opponent miss.

When to Use

Slip outside when the opponent throws a jab or cross. This is the safer slip direction because it takes you away from their rear hand follow-up.

Execution Steps

  1. Keep your eyes locked on the opponent's chest rather than their hands — the chest telegraphs all punches before the hands move, giving you an extra fraction of a second to react.
  2. Crunch your obliques on the lead side while simultaneously bending slightly at the knees — the movement should feel like a lateral crunch, not a lean, so your spine stays upright and your balance remains centered over your base.
  3. Shift your weight slightly onto your lead leg, loading that side for a potential counter cross — the weight transfer stores elastic energy in your obliques and hip that converts directly into punching power.
  4. Move your head just enough to let the punch pass your ear by 2-3 inches — minimal movement preserves your position and keeps you in range to counter immediately; excessive movement pulls you out of position and wastes energy.

Coaching Cues

"Eyes on the chest."
"Crunch the oblique — don't lean."
"Load the counter as you slip."

Pro Tips

  • A slip is an offensive move disguised as defense — as your head moves off the line, your rear side loads naturally for a cross counter; train yourself to fire the counter during the slip, not after.
  • Keep your hands up at cheekbone height throughout the slip — the head movement is your primary defense, but the gloves are your insurance policy against the second punch you didn't see coming.
  • Practice on a slip rope for 3-5 rounds daily to engrain minimal, efficient head movement — the rope teaches you to move just enough because moving too far causes the rope to hit you from behind.
  • Slip to the outside of the jab specifically — this takes you away from the opponent's rear hand, whereas slipping inside a jab puts you directly in the path of their cross.

Conditioning Drills

  • Slip Rope Drills: 3 rounds of 3 minutes continuous slipping under a rope at head height — builds the oblique endurance and lateral crunch pattern needed for sustained defensive head movement.
  • Side Planks: 3 sets of 45-60 seconds per side — builds the oblique isometric endurance for maintaining the crunched position without fatigue, which is critical when slipping multiple punches in sequence.
  • Isometric Neck Exercises: 3 sets of 10-second holds in each direction with manual resistance — builds neck stability and strength for rapid head trajectory changes without cervical compression or whiplash effect.

Q1 of 3
Which of these is a common mistake when performing the Slip Outside?

Common Mistakes

  • Bending at the waist and leaning forward to slip — this pitches your head into the opponent's punching range rather than moving it laterally off the line, and eliminates your ability to counter effectively because your weight is forward of your base.
  • Taking your eyes off the opponent during the slip — looking away even momentarily means you cannot see follow-up punches, and a slip without vision is just a random duck that may move you directly into the next punch.
  • Moving the head too far off the center line, which leaves you out of position to counter and requires a full recovery step to re-engage — elite slipping is about inches, not feet.
  • Slipping without keeping the hands up as backup defense — the slip moves your head, but your gloves must stay at cheekbone height in case the slip timing is off or the opponent throws a second punch.
