When to Use
Use against predictable jabbers who throw their jab with consistent timing and full arm extension. Wait for the jab, pull back just enough to make it miss by inches, then fire the cross through the open center lane while their lead hand is extended and their chin is exposed. High risk but extremely high reward when timed correctly.
Execution Steps
- From your stance, keep your weight slightly forward to bait the opponent into throwing the jab, presenting a target at their maximum range so they commit fully to the punch with complete arm extension.
- As the jab comes, shift your weight to the rear leg by sitting back on your hips and pulling your head just out of range — the pull should be minimal, only 3-4 inches, not a full retreat backward.
- While the opponent is still extended with their jab arm out and their rear hand dropped from the rotation, fire your cross straight down the open center lane that their extended arm created.
- Immediately return to your fighting guard and reset your weight forward to prevent the opponent from timing a follow-up combination while you're still sitting on your back foot.

Pro Tips
- Muhammad Ali made this famous as the "phantom" counter where the jab misses by fractions of an inch and the counter cross arrives before the opponent can retract their arm — study his pull counters against Sonny Liston.
- Make the pull counter even more devastating by stepping to the outside angle as you counter, landing the cross from a blind-side position where the opponent cannot see or defend the punch coming.
- The pull counter only works against straight punches (jabs and crosses) — never attempt to pull back against hooks, which follow your retreating head and land with even more force when you move backward into them.
Conditioning Drills
- Partner Drill: Have a partner throw light jabs at 50% speed while you practice the pull-and-counter timing for 4 rounds of 2 minutes, gradually increasing jab speed as your timing sharpens.
- Shadowboxing: 3 rounds visualizing an incoming jab and practicing the pull-counter motion with minimal backward movement, focusing on the weight shift to the rear leg and immediate cross.
- Neck Strengthening: 3 sets of 15 neck flexion/extension reps — the quick forward-backward head motion of the pull counter requires strong cervical muscles to control the rapid deceleration.
