The Cross (Straight Rear Hand)

A powerful straight punch thrown with the rear hand, driven by the full kinetic chain — force originates at the rear foot, travels through hip rotation, amplifies through the obliques and core, and releases through the shoulder and arm. The cross is the primary power punch in boxing and the natural follow-up to the jab, forming the foundational 1-2 combination that every fighter must master.

When to Use

Throw the cross when the opponent is stationary, after landing a jab, or as a counter when they step into range. It's your primary power punch at mid-range.

Execution Steps

  1. Push off the ball of your rear foot, feeling your weight transfer forward — your heel should lift off the canvas as you initiate the pivot.
  2. Pivot the rear foot inward ("squash the bug") and violently rotate your hips toward the target — this hip rotation generates roughly 60-70% of the punch's total power.
  3. Let the rotational force travel sequentially through your core, obliques, and into your shoulders — your torso should face almost square to the target at full extension.
  4. Extend the rear arm straight down the center line with the lead shoulder pulling back simultaneously, creating a whip-like torque effect between front and rear shoulders.
  5. Snap the hand back to guard immediately by reversing the rotation, resetting your feet to stance — never admire your work with the hand extended.

Coaching Cues

"Turn the back foot — squash the bug."
"Hip before hand."
"Punch through the target."

Pro Tips

  • Your rear shoulder should touch your chin at full extension — this shoulder-to-chin contact provides a natural shield against counter left hooks while maximizing your reach.
  • Throw the cross as the opponent steps forward into range — their forward momentum doubles the impact force and makes it nearly impossible for them to avoid the punch in time.
  • Aim through the target, not at the surface — visualize punching 6 inches past the opponent's head to ensure full power transfer rather than a slapping, surface-level impact.

Conditioning Drills

  • Russian Twists (Weighted): 3 sets of 20 reps per side with a 10-15lb plate — builds the oblique rotational strength that drives the cross's hip-to-fist kinetic chain.
  • Landmine Rotations: 3 sets of 12 per side — connects the hip pivot to shoulder extension in the exact movement pattern of the cross, training the sequential muscle firing.
  • Plyometric Pushups: 4 sets of 8-10 explosive reps — builds fast-twitch tricep power and chest engagement for explosive arm extension at the end of the chain.

Common Mistakes

  • Swinging the punch like a baseball bat in a wide arc instead of driving it straight — this adds travel distance, making the punch slower and easier to see, and exposes your ribs to a counter hook.
  • Leaving the rear foot flat on the canvas instead of pivoting onto the ball — this kills hip rotation and reduces your power output by more than half.
  • Leaning forward over your front knee, which shifts your center of gravity ahead of your base — if the punch misses, you'll stumble forward into the opponent's counter.
  • Locking out the elbow completely at full extension (WARNING: maintain a slight micro-bend to protect the joint from hyperextension injury, particularly during shadowboxing or when the punch misses the target).
