When to Use
Use the jab to control distance, interrupt the opponent's rhythm, set up power shots, and score points. It should be the first and most frequently thrown punch in any exchange.
Execution Steps
- Start in your boxing stance with hands at cheekbone height, elbows tucked to ribs, and weight evenly distributed — you should feel balanced enough to move in any direction.
- Push off the ball of your rear foot and step forward roughly 3-4 inches with your lead foot, transferring weight forward to add momentum without overcommitting your balance.
- Extend your lead arm straight out along the center line, lifting the lead shoulder to your chin so it acts as a shield against counter crosses.
- Rotate your fist so the palm faces the floor at the moment of impact — this pronation aligns your two largest knuckles (index and middle) with the forearm bones for structural integrity.
- Snap the hand back to your guard along the exact same path it traveled out, keeping the elbow tight so you don't leave a gap for hooks on the return.
Coaching Cues
Pro Tips
- Double the jab: throw the second jab before the first fully returns — the first disrupts their guard, the second sneaks through the opening before they can reset.
- Aim the jab at the opponent's chest or gloves to momentarily block their vision, then follow with a cross they never see — the punch you don't see is the one that hurts.
- Step slightly to the outside of the opponent's lead foot as you jab to take a dominant angle — this puts you offline from their rear hand and opens a clean lane for your cross.
Conditioning Drills
- Resistance Band Jabs: 3 sets of 100 fast jabs with a band looped around your back — builds shoulder endurance and snap-back speed for late rounds.
- Heavy Bag Burnouts: 4 rounds of 30-second max-speed jab intervals with 30 seconds rest — develops the anaerobic capacity to sustain jab volume under fatigue.
- Medicine Ball Chest Passes: 3 sets of 15 explosive two-handed passes against a wall — develops the fast-twitch tricep extension and front deltoid activation that powers the jab.
